Childhood friends

I am sure many of you cherish the girlfriends you've made throughout the years. Some you may have known since childhood, while others you could have just met. Do you ever wonder if the little ones having play dates with your children will grow up to remain life long friends with them? I know its doubtful with this day and age because many of us move around and beloved friends grow apart through the years but recently I was tickled by some pictures I took of Merrin with her friend Chloe. Chloe and Merrin were born just a month or two apart and over the short course of their lives they have seen each other almost on a weekly basis. You see, Chloe and her family go to our church and Merrin has been lucky enough to spend almost every Sunday with Chloe in the nursery. I have gotten to know Chloe's mom and the other week she invited us over for a play date. I loved watching Chloe and Merrin play together. It brought back memories of the girlfriends I had growing up in church. I was fortunate enough to have parents who had me in church every single Sunday and there were two or three girls who I grew up with from kindergarten through college because we saw each other all the time at church. From Sunday School to youth outings we would have the best time together, of course I can remember lots of little girl "cat fights" as well, but none the less they are memories that I cherish. When I look at these pictures of Chloe and Merrin, I can't help but wonder if they will have what I had growing up...the privilege of going to the same church your entire adolescent life. If not, that's OK as it will be God's plan but I sure will enjoy watching these two little girls play together for the time being! How sweet are they?????

Merrin's winning photo

I have to brag a bit on my little fairy. On the night of Halloween, our neighborhood has a drop-in where the kids stop by the clubhouse to have their picture made for an annual costume contest (they also receive treat bags). Someone donates various prizes and our neighborhood picks outside judges to select the winners. The pictures are then posted on the neighborhood website. 83 kids participated in this year's contest and only 5 or 6 winners were selected for various categories. We just found out this past week that Merrin was picked as "cutest girl". As her reward, she received a $10 gift card to Target!!! YEAH MERRIN!!! Here is Merrin's winning photo...not sure how she won without smiling but we were excited to receive the news none the less!

Well, Hello Dolly

Some of my friends have been using the term "OPAM" in the blogging world and for those who haven't been properly introduced to this term, it means One Project A Month! I guess you could say that our OPAM for November is to finish Merrin's big girl room!!! Ever since we found out our family was expanding we knew we would have to get creative on storage in our small three bedroom house! What once was our lovely "UNC blue room", which sufficed as an office/guest bedroom, is now going to be Merrin's big girl room (the nursery will remain very much the same as it was gender neutral for the most part). Our biggest challenge was what to do with our computer desk/mini home office which ultimately we moved into our master bedroom. This was a mini OPAM in itself as I had to sell our old computer desk which was white and purchase a dark cherry colored desk so that it would match our bedroom furniture. All I can say is thank goodness for Craig's List! I listed the white computer desk in the AM and by late that evening it was sold and already picked up by it's new owner. We also had to massively reorganize our closets as we were using the office/guest bedroom closet for storage so after one yard sale and a few trips to Goodwill we now have an empty closet for Miss Merrin. After clearing out the room it was ready to be painted which is where the "Hello Dolly" comes in as this is the color we picked at Lowe's. The picture does not do it justice as its much "pinker" in person but I'm not an experienced painter and had no clue it would come out as bright as it did but thank goodness it really turned out nice and matches the bedding perfect. Our next step is to paint an old dresser white, hang curtains and add a few decorative touches so this will be our November OPAM and I'll try to keep you updated on our progress. Our goal is to have Merrin sleeping in her big girl bed by mid December so she'll have plenty of time to get used to it before baby boy arrives! Here are some pics of our office before and after.

The beach, cousin Emory and Halloween

You might be thinking those are very random things to all be in one subject title but we've had a lot of excitement within the past two weeks and I haven't taken the time to blog about any of it! So here it goes...

Keith and I decided to take a quick trip down to the beach the weekend before Halloween. Keith had been working long hours for the October deadline so we felt he deserved a day off. We drove down on Thursday night and stayed through Sunday. Of course it rained the whole weekend but we had a great time none the less. It rained so much on Friday night that it flooded almost all of Cherry Grove.

You can see in the pics how much water was in the road (don't even ask what Keith is doing outside with the coffee pot, its a long story!). We literally had to wait until after the tide went out before we could drive our car again. Keith's aunt and uncle have a place right next to his mom's house and recently they purchased a golf cart which we couldn't be more thrilled about. Keith's aunt and uncle have no garage to store the golf cart in so lucky us, it stays at Keith's mom's and they are gracious enough to let us use it anytime we want. Merrin fell IN LOVE with this golf cart (I should have gotten her picture on it but maybe next time). Every time we walked outside she would point to the cart and say "ride, ride"!! We drove that poor little golf cart all over the place. Mayzi-dog even took a few spins in it although one time she got excited over a bird and jumped clear off my lap into the street. Luckily she was not harmed but it sure scared me to death. Keith took Merrin on long walks on the beach (how sweet) and Merrin loved every minute she spent with him.

Lately Merrin has become quite the daddy's girl, in fact this morning she cried when he left for work. Keith rarely is home when Merrin wakes up in the morning but today he went into work a little later and Merrin was in tears when he left. I LOVE watching them together, it melts my heart!

The week after we returned from the beach we had a lot to look forward to! Not only was it the week of Halloween but Merrin's cousin, Emory, was coming for a short visit all the way from Arizona! Keith's brother, Eric, had to be in a wedding in Ashville last weekend so they flew in on Thursday and we were lucky enough to have dinner with them. Merrin and Emory and getting to the age where they have soooo much fun together. It is so precious watching these two little girls in action, they just laugh and giggle and run around everywhere. After a wonderful dinner and playtime, Laura and I gave the girls a bath together and that was needless to say a challenge. Emory has no fear when it comes to water and is quite the little fish and Merrin must have been taking notes because recently she has become a little more adventurous in the bathtub (thanks cousin "Mimi").

After bath the girls serenaded us on the piano (how cute are they??)!! It was so good seeing cousin Mimi and we only wish they lived closer so we could do things like this more often. It will be Christmas before we see them again but we are certainly looking forward to it!

Halloween came and went in a hurry and I'm happy to say it was a good one! We started off by attending my parents' church's fall festival on Wednesday night and Merrin loved it.
She enjoyed watching all the older kids play games and Merrin even participated in the pumpkin bean bag toss and won some pretzels. She loved being with her Mamaw too! Last year Merrin was only around 7 months old so we didn't even venture out of the house. We dressed her up and just stayed home handing out candy to the trick-or-treaters. This year however was our first year NOT staying home. On Halloween night we decided to go to our church and participate in the "trunk-or-treat". Merrin had a blast!! Not only did she stay up WAY past her bedtime but she also had who knows how many chocolate candy bars thanks to her favorite person at church, Miss Barbara! Here are some pics of Merrin at our church with Miss Barbara as well as the inflatable jumpy things that Merrin just loved! Don't even ask what Keith is supposed to be...all I can say is that there was a "Jonas Brother" running around church with no hair!

Hope all of you had a terrific Halloween!! I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of your little ones' pictures from Halloween. My friends have the cutest kids!!!

At least it's over!

Today was my first experience of voting in person as the past two elections were by absentee, one while I was in college and the second while Keith and I were living in Canada, and I have to say it was a very exciting experience. I felt privileged to be able to walk in and cast my vote albeit not the outcome I had wanted it was a wonderful feeling to have a voice...and as you can see below, Merrin had a great time enjoying the free chocolate they were handing out at our local precinct (it kept her quiet while I maneuvered through the electronic ballot).Although the outcome was not as we had hoped for, at least this election is over!! No more phones calls, annoying commercials and countless yard signs (which yes, we were guilty of). We all prayed for God's will to be done and now we will continue to pray for our nation! I will say that no matter who is president, there is no other country I would rather be living in. We are truly blessed for our freedom and I hope we never have to live a day without it.

Don't forget to vote

Today is the big day that we have all been praying about. Please don't forget to get out there and vote...unless you're voting for Obama and then well...in that case...STAY HOME! Only joking of course...but seriously VOTE MCCAIN-PALIN 2008!!!!!!!!!!
